Love as Foundation for Belonging

Rabia al-Adawiyya taught that love transcends obligation and fear, becoming the truest bond between souls. In building community intentionally, this means establishing groups rooted not in shared convenience or utility, but in genuine care for one another's spiritual and material wellbeing. When members love each other as ends in themselves rather than means to external goals, the community becomes resilient through crisis. This concept challenges transactional community models and invites leaders to ask: Are we gathering because we must, or because we choose to love these specific people? Rabia's example shows that communities sustained by love develop deeper accountability, forgiveness, and commitment than those built on ideology alone.
