Separation of Love-From and Love-For

Rabia distinguished loving God from fear of punishment versus loving God for love's sake—revealing how belonging differs from belonging-out-of-fear.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia famously prayed, "O God, if I worship You for fear of Hell, burn me in Hell, and if I worship You in hope of Paradise, exclude me from Paradise. But if I worship You for Your Own sake, grudge me not Your everlasting Beauty." This teaching separates love-from (motivated by avoiding harm or gaining reward) from love-for (motivated by the beloved's inherent worth). Applied to belonging, this distinction illuminates why fitting in often masquerades as belonging. When you belong-from-fear—of rejection, poverty, social death—you're not truly belonging but performing under duress. Genuine belonging is love-for: you're in community because these people, this place, these values call to your deepest self. The emotional signature differs entirely. Fitting in produces anxiety and inauthenticity; belonging produces resonance and freedom. By examining your emotional architecture—are you here from fear or from genuine affection?—you clarify whether you're fitting in or truly belonging. This practice invites radical honesty about your relationships and communities. What are you doing from fear masquerading as loyalty?
