Love as the Measure of Practice

A principle that evaluates all community decisions, structures, and practices against the criterion of whether they increase or decrease love among members.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia's central teaching was that love—not fear, not law, not even the promise of paradise—should be the measure of spiritual authenticity. Love as the Measure of Practice applies this principle directly to community governance and decision-making. Rather than evaluating proposals based on efficiency, tradition, or individual preference, communities can ask: Does this practice deepen love among us? Does this decision expand or contract our capacity for compassion? Does this structure increase or diminish genuine care? This framework provides a consistent metric for what might otherwise become disputes about rules and procedures. When used thoughtfully, it moves communities away from legalism toward living systems that adapt based on relational health. Rabia taught that love is both the means and the end—it is how we travel and where we arrive. For communities, this means that the quality of relationships and the presence of genuine care become the primary success indicators, more important than growth metrics, efficiency, or external achievement. This approach requires wisdom and discernment but creates communities where love is not incidental but central to every choice.
