The practice of grounding collective action in genuine love rather than ideology, making community work sustainable and transformative.
Rabia al-Adawiyya taught that love without expectation of reward is the highest spiritual state. In community organizing, this principle transforms how we build movements. Rather than organizing around grievance alone, we organize around love for our neighbors, our communities, and the world we wish to create. This love becomes the emotional and ethical foundation that sustains organizers through setbacks, prevents burnout, and creates bonds deeper than transactional relationships. When community members feel they are organized with love rather than manipulated toward external goals, trust deepens and participation becomes authentic. This concept challenges instrumental organizing models and asks: Are we building community because we genuinely love these people and this place, or are we using community as a means to another end?
