Love as Organizing Principle

Rabia al-Adawiyya taught that love of the Divine should be pure and selfless, free from hope of reward or fear of punishment. In community organizing, this translates to mobilizing people through genuine care for one another's wellbeing rather than coercion, guilt, or transactional incentives. When organizers lead with love—authentic concern for their neighbors' dignity and flourishing—they create movements that are more resilient, inclusive, and morally grounded. This concept challenges the efficiency-focused organizing models that rely on manipulation or fear-based messaging. Instead, it invites organizers to cultivate deep relational power, to see each community member as worthy of love, and to build institutions that reflect this fundamental value. Communities organized through love create bonds that persist beyond campaign victories.
