Love as Recognition, Not Approval

True belonging arises from being deeply known and loved for who you are, not from performing the version of yourself others expect.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia al-Adawiyya taught that divine love transcends transaction and approval-seeking. She loved God without hope of paradise or fear of hellfire—a radical rejection of conditional belonging. Applied to human community, this reveals the trap of fitting in: we often craft acceptable versions of ourselves to earn belonging, when true belonging requires being witnessed in our wholeness. The distinction matters profoundly. Fitting in demands conformity; belonging demands recognition. When we release the exhausting work of performing acceptability and instead offer our authentic selves to community, we discover whether we truly belong there. Rabia's fierce devotion models this: she belonged to her spiritual circle not because she fit their expectations, but because she was loved for her uncompromising truth. Communities built on fitting in are fragile and conditional. Communities built on recognition and authentic love are resilient and liberating.
