Love as Recognition, Not Approval

True belonging flows from being known and loved for who you are, not from earning acceptance through conformity or performance.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia al-Adawiyya taught that divine love transcends the need for external validation or reward. Applied to belonging, this means the deepest connections arise when someone is recognized in their authentic self, not when they've successfully performed a role others expect. Fitting in demands constant adjustment—monitoring behavior, softening opinions, reshaping yourself to match group norms. Belonging, by contrast, requires vulnerability: showing your actual thoughts, struggles, and values. When Rabia spoke of loving God without fear of punishment or hope of reward, she modeled a radical authenticity. In communities of true belonging, you're accepted not because you've mastered the rules, but because your genuine presence is valued. This distinction separates relationships built on conditional approval from those rooted in genuine recognition. The question shifts from "Am I acceptable?" to "Am I seen?"
