Love Without Condition or Expectation

Rabia al-Adawiyya taught that true love exists independent of reward or fear of punishment. Applied to adult relationships with children, this means loving them for their own sake rather than for gratitude, obedience, or fulfillment of parental expectations. Parents practicing this approach release their adult children from the burden of reciprocal debt, creating space for authentic connection. This transforms the relationship from transactional to transformational, where the parent's love becomes a gift rather than an investment requiring return. Such love paradoxically deepens bonds because it removes pressure and judgment, allowing adult children to show up authentically without performing gratitude or obligation.
