Love Without Distinction

Rabia al-Adawiyya taught that true love of the Divine must transcend human categories and preferences. When we practice favoritism, we fragment this unified love into hierarchies of worth based on utility, appearance, or proximity rather than inherent dignity. This concept examines how showing preference to certain people—whether family, the wealthy, or the attractive—contradicts the spiritual principle of universal belonging. Rabia's radical devotion demanded that practitioners love for God's sake alone, not for reward or social advantage. Favoritism emerges when we love conditionally, withdrawing affection when someone no longer serves our interests. By studying love without distinction, we expose how favoritism costs us spiritual authenticity and others their rightful place in our hearts.
