Love Without Expectation of Return

A practice of offering unconditional parental care without requiring reciprocal gratitude or behavioral compliance, rooted in Rabia's model of loving the Divine purely.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia al-Adawiyya taught that true love seeks nothing in return—not reward, not recognition, not even gratitude. In the parent-teen relationship, this concept invites parents to examine whether their expressions of care contain hidden conditions or expectations of obedience and appreciation. When adolescents feel loved contingently—only when they comply or achieve—they develop fragmented identities. Rabia's approach suggests that parental love, like divine love in her tradition, should be offered freely even when teens pull away, rebel, or fail to acknowledge the sacrifice. This doesn't mean abandoning boundaries; rather, it means the boundaries exist for the teen's wellbeing, not for parental validation. Adolescents who experience this unconditional grounding often develop greater trust and are more likely to internalize values rather than merely obey from fear.
