Love Without Motive or Expectation

The practice of removing transactional thinking from relationships, exposing how favoritism is rooted in hidden agendas and unmet needs.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia famously prayed to God without hope of reward or fear of punishment, embodying love stripped of motive. This radical detachment illuminates why favoritism persists: we favor those from whom we expect something in return—loyalty, gratification, social status, or emotional comfort. Our preferences reveal our hidden transactions. In teams, families, and communities, we unconsciously rank people by what they offer us, not by their inherent worth. Rabia's teaching invites examination of these motives: do we favor because of genuine connection, or because the person makes us feel good about ourselves? Do we privilege certain voices because they validate us? When we practice loving without expectation of return, we disable the mechanism that drives favoritism. This doesn't mean feigning equal emotion toward everyone—authenticity matters—but rather clarifying the difference between preference and privilege. We can have genuine connections with some while maintaining equal respect and consideration for all.
