Love Without Preference or Attachment

The practice of extending equal spiritual devotion to all people regardless of status, relationship, or utility, directly countering favoritism at its root.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia al-Adawiyya taught that pure love of the Divine transcends all earthly distinctions and loyalties. When we practice love without preference, we recognize that favoritism emerges from ego's desire to elevate certain people above others for personal benefit or comfort. This Sufi principle suggests that genuine belonging comes not from special treatment or insider status, but from recognizing the Divine spark in every person equally. Applying this to favoritism means examining which relationships we've elevated through bias, and where we've withheld belonging from those outside our preferred circle. The cost of favoritism is spiritual: it fragments community and creates false hierarchies. By cultivating indiscriminate compassion, we build legacy based on justice rather than preference, transforming how we distribute our time, resources, and recognition.
