Love Without Preference or Condition

Rabia's doctrine that divine love transcends all human distinctions, revealing how favoritism violates the spiritual principle that all beings deserve equal devotion.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia al-Adawiyya taught that pure love of God required releasing all personal preferences and conditions—loving not for reward or fear, but for the beloved's sake alone. This framework exposes favoritism as spiritual corruption: when we privilege certain people, we fragment the unified love that should flow equally through all relationships. Favoritism creates false hierarchies of worth, contradicting Rabia's insight that every soul reflects divine light equally. In communities, this concept challenges us to examine which relationships receive our authentic presence and which receive only conditional regard. The cost of favoritism appears immediately: those favored develop brittle entitlement, while those overlooked internalize unworthiness. Rabia's teaching suggests that liberation from favoritism requires the same surrender she demanded of all spiritual seekers—releasing the ego's need to rank, categorize, and reward according to personal benefit.
