Love Without Preference

The practice of extending equal divine love to all beings regardless of kinship, status, or personal attachment, directly countering favoritism's root cause.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia al-Adawiyya taught that true love of the Divine transcends all earthly distinctions, including those between favored and unfavored people. This concept challenges favoritism by reorienting the heart toward unconditional devotion that recognizes equal worth in every person. When we practice love without preference, we dismantle the psychological machinery that creates in-groups and out-groups. Rabia's tradition suggests that favoritism emerges when we love conditionally—favoring those who resemble us, serve our interests, or belong to our circle. By cultivating a love that flows equally to all, we expose favoritism as a contraction of the heart, a failure of spiritual sight. This reorientation costs us the comfort of tribal belonging but gains us integrity and freedom from the exhausting politics of preference.
