Muhabbah: Love as the Ground of Belonging

A framework where love itself—not shared beliefs, status, or utility—becomes the fundamental basis for community membership.

Why It Matters

Muhabbah, the Arabic concept of overwhelming, all-encompassing love, sits at the heart of Rabia's teaching. She taught that love isn't sentimental; it's the ground of reality, the force that binds all beings. When muhabbah is present, belonging follows naturally—not because you've met criteria or earned your seat, but because love recognizes itself in you. This love is unconditional, which means it doesn't depend on your performance, credentials, or alignment with group ideology. Fitting in requires constant proof of worthiness; muhabbah asks only that you show up as you are. Rabia's communities were organized around this principle: members gathered because they loved the Divine and therefore each other, not because they shared demographics or political views. This creates a radically different belonging—one that's stable because it's not based on performance metrics that constantly shift.
