Decision-making processes that combine democratic participation with spiritual practices of collective listening and discernment.
Rabia's spiritual practice involved deep listening and seeking guidance from something beyond individual ego. Applied to community organizing, this becomes mystical democracy: decision-making that honors both the wisdom of collective participation and the insights accessed through contemplative practice. Mystical democracy uses processes like council circles, consensus-building with contemplative silence, and practices that invoke the spiritual resources of the community. These approaches slow down decision-making but produce stronger buy-in and more creative solutions, as they access the full wisdom and intuition of the group rather than just rational argument. This particularly serves communities with contemplative or spiritual traditions—many Black church traditions, Indigenous practices, and other faith-based organizing already embody this approach. Mystical democracy also includes space for prophecy: the recognition that some members may receive insights or visions that guide the community's direction. This rebalances typical organizing processes that privilege loud voices and rational debate, making space for introverted wisdom-keepers and visionaries.
