Pure Intention (Niyyah) as Belonging Compass

The Islamic principle of examining your motivation reveals whether you're chasing belonging (authentic) or fitting in (approval-seeking).

Rabia
Why It Matters

Niyyah—intention examined at the root—was central to Rabia's spiritual practice. Applied to community, it becomes a diagnostic tool: why are you seeking this group's acceptance? If the answer centers on what you'll gain (status, safety, approval), you're fitting in. If it centers on genuine resonance with their values and your capacity to contribute love and presence, that's belonging. Rabia examined her own intentions ruthlessly, asking whether her devotion came from fear of hell or love of God; whether she served to earn reward or from pure generosity. This same rigor applies to relationships. Before joining a community, pause: am I drawn here because I authentically align with these people's essence, or because joining would prove something about me? Communities built on aligned niyyah sustain belonging. Communities built on approval-seeking sustain only hollow fitting in, because the motivation remains external. Cultivate the habit of checking your intention before committing time and emotional energy to a community.
