Preference as Idolatry

A framework viewing favoritism as a form of spiritual corruption, where attachment to preferred people or outcomes replaces devotion to the Divine.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia famously rejected conditional love of God—loving Him for reward or fearing Him for punishment. She saw such love as idolatrous, a worship of self-interest masked as piety. This concept extends her insight: favoritism is idolatry of the preferred. When we elevate certain people, we invest them with undue power over our peace and worth. A parent's favorite child becomes a false god whose approval we chase. A manager's favored employee becomes an idol whose validation we crave. Rabia taught that this distorts our perception and enslaves our hearts. Favoritism typically emerges from deep insecurity—we cling to those who mirror us, comfort us, or confirm our value. By naming this as idolatry, we expose its spiritual bankruptcy. The cost is twofold: we lose freedom (enslaved to the preferred), and we lose community (unable to see the unloved as worthy). Her tradition calls for a radical reorientation where all people are recognized as mirrors of the Divine, equally deserving of our regard and presence.
