Presence Over Performance in Relationship

Prioritizing authentic relational presence with the child over maintaining a perfect parental image or achieving optimal outcomes.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia rejected the performance-oriented spirituality of her time—the showy prayers and public displays of piety. She valued intimate presence with the divine above all external religious performance. In parenting, this principle means that children need the parent's genuine presence far more than they need perfect parenting technique or maximal achievement. Authoritarian parenting often becomes performance-focused: the parent is primarily concerned with the child's outward behavior reflecting well on the parent, the family's image, and achievement metrics. The child becomes an extension of parental ego. Authoritative parenting prioritizes relational presence: being genuinely available, curious, and emotionally responsive to the child. A parent might make mistakes, set imperfect boundaries, or have difficult moments—but the child knows they are deeply attended to and valued. This quality of presence is more healing and growth-inducing than flawless technique. Rabia teaches that intimacy and authentic connection form the actual spiritual and psychological foundation of wisdom. A parent who is fully present—even imperfectly—transmits more than a parent who performs perfection while emotionally absent. The child internalizes: 'I am worthy of genuine attention and love.'
