Presence Without Hierarchy

The practice of being fully present to each person as equally worthy of attention, countering the selective presence that favoritism creates.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia's teachings emphasize presence—being fully in relationship with the divine and with others. Favoritism distorts presence: we give our best attention to favored people and perfunctory attention to others. This creates a hierarchy of belonging where some people feel truly seen and others feel peripheral. In families, favorites receive the engaged parent while others get distraction. In workplaces, preferred employees get mentorship while others manage alone. This selective presence costs deeply: it teaches the disfavored that they are less worthy, less interesting, less valuable. Over time, communities fracture into inner circles and margins. Rabia's alternative is radical democratic presence—meeting each person with the same depth of attention and care. This doesn't mean treating all situations identically, but rather ensuring that each individual receives genuine recognition of their humanity. When we practice presence without hierarchy, we rebuild the foundation of belonging. Everyone knows they matter. Everyone is held in the community's attention. This costs favoritism its power, but builds something stronger: genuine collective care.
