Purification Through Detachment

A contemplative practice of releasing attachment to outcomes and to people's approval, which undermines the desperate grasping that drives favoritism.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia taught that favoritism often stems from attachment anxiety: we favor those we fear losing, those whose approval we need, those who mirror back an identity we're clinging to. The practice of purification through detachment involves gradually loosening these desperate grips on people and outcomes. This is not coldness or indifference—Rabia's love was legendary—but rather a freedom from compulsive preference. Through contemplative practice, we learn to distinguish between authentic love and attachment-based favoritism. We notice when we're being nice to someone to secure their favor versus when we're genuinely present to their needs. We observe when we're excluding someone because they threaten our identity versus when genuine incompatibility exists. Over time, this practice reveals that most favoritism is driven by our own insecurity rather than by any objective difference between people. As attachment loosens, we become capable of genuine impartiality—not the cold impartiality of someone who doesn't care, but the warm impartiality of someone who is free.
