Rabia's Radical Inclusion Principle

The practice of honoring all ancestors—beloved and harmful, known and forgotten—with equal spiritual dignity as Rabia honored all creation.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia al-Adawiyya famously declared her love extended to all beings, even those who harmed her, reflecting Divine compassion beyond human judgment. This radical inclusion transforms ancestor veneration by insisting that we honor not only noble ancestors but also those who caused suffering, trauma, and injustice. Across traditions—from Jewish Holocaust remembrance that honors victims and perpetrators in historical truth, to Indigenous healing circles that acknowledge ancestors' complicity in colonialism, to South African Ubuntu philosophy processing apartheid legacies—this principle enables more honest, complete ancestor work. Rather than sanitizing family history or ignoring difficult ancestors, we include them in our veneration with clear-eyed compassion, recognizing that transformation occurs through complete acknowledgment rather than selective memory.
