Release and Renewal

A cyclical practice of periodically releasing expectations and fears about your adult child, allowing the relationship to renew authentically.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia's spiritual path involved continuous renewal through surrender and recommitment. In adult relationships with adult children, the practice of release and renewal acknowledges that relationships stagnate when parents grip tightly to past versions of their children or outdated patterns of interaction. Release and renewal is a cyclical practice: at chosen intervals (perhaps annually, or during transition points), parents consciously release their held narratives. What expectations am I still carrying? What fears about my child's choices still control my responses? What version of them am I relating to rather than who they actually are now? Through this release—prayer, journaling, conversation—parents create space for renewal. This might involve renegotiating boundaries, reestablishing communication patterns, or reimagining how you spend time together. The adult child, in turn, may release their own old narratives about the parent. This practice prevents relationships from becoming fixed and defensive. It honors that both parent and adult child are continuously becoming. Regular release and renewal keeps the relationship alive, honest, and growing rather than calcified by habit and unexamined assumptions.
