The Sanctuary of Solitude Before Community

Rabia's practice of retreating into deep devotion teaches that authentic belonging requires first establishing an unshakeable inner sanctuary independent of others' approval.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia withdrew to the desert not to escape humanity, but to cultivate an interior life so rooted in spiritual truth that external validation became irrelevant. This inversion of belonging—building it from within rather than seeking it without—addresses the core trap of fitting in: the desperate need for external affirmation. When we establish our own spiritual or philosophical center, we develop what might be called "belonging to ourselves" first. Only then can we engage with community from wholeness rather than neediness. The distinction becomes practical: those who fit in are perpetually anxious, monitoring how they're perceived. Those who belong have already answered the question of their own worth. Rabia's example suggests that true community is built by people who have already graduated from the school of seeking approval. The sanctuary of solitude is the prerequisite for genuine belonging—it's the inner work that allows us to show up as ourselves, not as a version designed to please.
