Belonging Through Shared Longing

Identifying community not by shared identity or achievement but by shared yearning for transcendence, creating bonds that transcend social categories.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia taught that those who long for the divine in similar ways form the deepest community, regardless of other differences. This concept reframes belonging as alignment of desire rather than matching of traits or background. In conventional fitting in, we're often trying to match the group's identity—their style, interests, opinions, or achievements. But shared longing creates a different kind of bond: the recognition that you're reaching toward the same truth or meaning together. This might be spiritual transcendence, as in Rabia's circles, or it might be longing for justice, beauty, knowledge, or healing. When people share a genuine longing, they can belong to each other even across vast differences of culture, class, or experience. Shared longing also protects against the shallow belonging of fitting in: you can't fake a deep yearning, and pretending to long for something you don't creates isolation even within crowds. Rabia's students came from different backgrounds but shared an unmistakable spiritual yearning. Building belonging on shared longing means finding those who want what you want and building community around that mutual reaching toward something greater.
