Sovereignty Through Devotion

Building personal and collective freedom not through individual autonomy but through willing submission to shared values and collective purpose.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Paradoxically, Rabia found ultimate freedom through complete devotion to something beyond herself. In organizing contexts, this challenges the Western organizing mythology of individual empowerment. True power emerges when people choose to align themselves with collective values and purposes larger than personal gain. A community organized around shared devotion to justice, love, and liberation experiences a different kind of freedom than one organized around individual rights assertions. Members willingly constrain individual impulses in service of collective good, not from obligation but from genuine alignment. This creates movements where people can trust each other deeply because alignment is real, not forced. Rabia's model suggests that organizers should help people discover what they're willing to devote themselves to collectively, then build movements around those shared devotions. This produces the trust necessary for risk-taking and sustained sacrifice.
