Tawhid: Unity as Belonging Practice

The practice of perceiving radical unity underlying apparent separation, transforming how you relate to community and difference.

Why It Matters

Tawhid—the affirmation of absolute unity—means that your deepest belonging emerges from recognizing the same Divine essence in all beings. This radically reframes fitting in: you don't need to fit into groups because you already belong to the fundamental unity underlying all existence. Rabia's tawhid was fierce: she loved God alone, which paradoxically freed her to love people without performance or possession. Fitting in assumes separation (I'm outside the group, must gain entry); tawhid assumes unity (I'm already fundamentally connected; now I choose how to express that connection). In practice, tawhid invites communities to move beyond tolerance-based inclusion ("we'll accept your difference") to unity-based belonging ("we recognize our essential sameness while honoring distinct expressions"). This transforms diversity conversations from "fitting in despite difference" to "belonging through difference as part of one whole." For individuals, tawhid practice means recognizing that your need to belong and others' need to belong spring from identical depths. This shared source creates compassion that transcends fitting-in's conditional acceptance and builds legacy communities grounded in mutual recognition of unity.
