Love Without Condition or Expectation

Rabia al-Adawiyya taught that love of the Divine required no bargaining, no fear of punishment, no hope of reward—only pure devotion. Applied to parent-teen relationships, this concept invites parents to love their adolescents not as investments to be managed or reflections of parental success, but as beloved beings worthy of love simply for existing. This dissolves the conditional dynamics that often trigger adolescent rebellion and shame. When teens feel loved without needing to perform, achieve, or comply perfectly, they develop secure identity and capacity for genuine connection.
