Love Without Condition or Expectation

A practice of offering parental devotion that seeks no return, mirroring Rabia's pure love of the divine, to transform the adolescent power struggle.

Why It Matters

Rabia al-Adawiyya famously loved God without fear of punishment or hope of reward—a radical unconditional devotion. Applied to parent-teen relationships, this concept invites parents to love their adolescents without demands for gratitude, obedience, or validation of parental choices. When teens feel loved for their emerging selves rather than their compliance, defensive walls lower. This doesn't mean abandoning boundaries; instead, it means separating the teen's identity from their behavior, and the parent's love from outcomes. Rabia's tradition teaches that pure love creates safety. In adolescence, where identity formation and separation are developmentally urgent, unconditional parental love becomes the paradoxical ground on which healthy autonomy grows. Teens tested in such love are freer to explore, fail, and return.
