The Undifferentiated Heart

A state of equal love for all beings regardless of status, relationship, or utility—the antidote to favoritism rooted in Rabia's radical indifference to worldly hierarchy.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia al-Adawiyya taught that true devotion means loving God alone, which naturally dissolves attachment to rank, kinship, or personal advantage. The Undifferentiated Heart is the practice of extending compassionate attention equally across all relationships and encounters, free from the calculation that makes favoritism possible. When we favor one person over another, we reveal an unhealed wound: the belief that some souls matter more than others. Rabia's tradition invites us to examine where we unconsciously rank people by utility, beauty, or connection to our needs. This concept asks: Can you encounter each person as a complete being worthy of presence, not as a means to belonging or status? The cost of favoritism is the fragmentation of the heart; the practice of undifferentiation restores its wholeness and our capacity for genuine community.
