The Undifferentiated Heart

A state of loving without preference or distinction, where favoritism dissolves because the heart recognizes equal divine presence in all beings.

Why It Matters

Rabia al-Adawiyya taught that true devotion transcends human categories and attachments. The undifferentiated heart loves without ranking, preferring, or calculating worth—a radical equality rooted in recognizing God's presence everywhere. When we practice this, favoritism loses its grip because we stop sorting people into hierarchies of deserving or undeserving. This doesn't mean indifference; rather, it means loving each person fully without needing them to compete for our attention. The cost of favoritism appears clearly here: it fragments our capacity for genuine connection and reduces people to instrumental value. By cultivating an undifferentiated heart, we reclaim wholeness and honor the dignity in everyone, regardless of utility or status.
