The Veil of Attachment

How emotional attachment to specific outcomes blinds us to our unconscious biases and creates the conditions for favoritism.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia taught detachment not as coldness but as freedom from ego-driven desire. When we become attached to particular people succeeding or specific groups thriving, we unconsciously rationalize preferential treatment. The veil of attachment obscures the moment favoritism begins. We convince ourselves our bias is justified because we've become emotionally invested in a particular outcome. This attachment costs communities their integrity and individuals their self-knowledge. Rabia's framework suggests examining our favorite people, projects, and causes: Where have we attached our identity? Where have we stopped seeing clearly? The practice involves acknowledging attachment without judgment, then testing our decisions against this standard: Would we make the same choice if no one we cared about benefited? This honest inquiry reveals how favoritism operates invisibly through the veil of our attachments.
