A meditative stance of observing preferences and favoritism arising without identifying with them or acting upon them.
Central to Rabia's mystical practice was the cultivation of witness consciousness—the ability to observe the mind's activity without becoming entangled in it. When preferences and favoritism arise (as they naturally do), the witness simply notices: 'This is a preference. This is the ego seeking advantage. This is fear trying to secure belonging.' This non-identification is not suppression; it's liberation. The cost of being unconsciously caught in our preferences is that we act them out automatically, creating harm without intention and then justifying our actions through story. The practice of witness consciousness interrupts this loop. By observing without judgment, we create space between impulse and action—space where choice becomes possible. Over time, this practice rewires our relationships. We still experience preference, but it no longer compels us. We can hold a preference (I love my child) without that preference becoming favoritism (therefore I dismiss your child's needs). This is the foundation of mature belonging and authentic legacy.
