The Witnessing Practice: Seeing Others Across Time

A contemplative practice of truly seeing—truly witnessing—the humanity, struggles, and beauty of family members across generations, creating presence that honors ubuntu.

Why It Matters

Rabia's love required complete presence and vulnerability—she saw the Divine in all things, turning her gaze with full attention and open heart. The witnessing practice applies this to ubuntu by asking: How deeply do you see your grandmother's hands? Your child's fears? Your great-grandchild's potential? African communities traditionally practiced this through storytelling circles, elder councils, and collective meals where each person's life was honored and held. Witnessing means listening without fixing, remembering names and struggles, acknowledging the personhood of those you will never meet, and recognizing ancestors in current descendants. It is the antidote to the disconnection and anonymity of modern life. When you truly witness across generations—across time—you cannot exploit, harm, or forget. You become accountable. This practice strengthens ubuntu by making intergenerational bonds visceral and undeniable.
