Favoritism depends on selective witnessing—we attend closely to the favored while overlooking the disfavored. When we practice true witnessing, the cost of favoritism becomes undeniable: those we favor feel seen only partially (through the distortion of preference) while those we disfavor feel invisible. Neither experience constitutes authentic belonging. The alchemy of presence transmutes the energy we spend on judgment into the capacity for genuine encounter. In community, witnessing means acknowledging each person's struggle, worth, and need equally, regardless of how they serve us. This practice costs us the comfort of easy categorization but purchases something far more valuable: communities where people are fully present to each other, where invisibility ends, and where worth is not a question but a recognized reality.
