The Practice of Witnessing Without Judgment

Parenting as an act of bearing witness to the child's experience and growth, offering presence and understanding before correction or instruction.

Rabia
Why It Matters

A central practice in Rabia's spiritual guidance was witnessing—fully seeing and honoring another's journey without imposing judgment or agenda. She created space for others to discover truth through their own experience. In parenting, this practice transforms how authority operates. Authoritarian parents often skip witnessing; they see a behavior and immediately correct it. Authoritative parenting informed by Rabia's wisdom begins with genuine witnessing: notice the child's emotion, effort, confusion, or struggle; reflect back what you observe; understand the context; only then respond. A child who feels truly seen—not just observed for compliance—develops secure attachment and internalized values. When a parent says, "I see you're frustrated because the task is hard, and you're working through it," the child experiences being witnessed. This doesn't mean absence of correction; it means correction flows from understanding. Children raised with this practice develop their own capacity to witness themselves—to notice their patterns, emotions, and growth—building self-awareness and genuine responsibility rather than mere obedience.
