Longing as a Path to Authenticity

Rumi's central theme of longing—the soul's yearning for union with the beloved—translates into humanist philosophy as the authentic desire within us that points toward meaning. Rather than dismissing longing as mere emotion, this concept honors it as a navigation system for the self. In secular contexts, our deepest longings reveal what we genuinely value: connection, creation, justice, understanding. When we suppress or ignore these yearnings to conform to external expectations, we lose touch with our humanity.
