Love as the Bridge Between Faiths

Central to Rumi's entire spiritual vision is the conviction that love (ishq) is the fundamental reality and the supreme purpose of existence. This reframes the interfaith prayer challenge: rather than beginning with doctrine and attempting to reconcile incompatibilities, begin with love and allow doctrine to become secondary. A Christian and a Muslim may have different systematic theologies, but if both are motivated by profound love of God, they share the thing that matters most. Rumi's poetry constantly emphasizes that the Beloved cares far more about the quality of heart than the correctness of formula. This approach doesn't require denying real theological differences, but it establishes a hierarchy of importance: the loving impulse takes priority. In practical terms, when communities gather for prayer across traditions, beginning with cultivation of genuine care for one another's spiritual journeys—rather than attempting intellectual reconciliation—creates an atmosphere where differences become enriching rather than threatening. Love becomes the ground where diverse prayers can coexist and even enhance one another.
