Love as Transgressive Spiritual Force

Leaders position themselves as instruments of love's transgressive power, asking followers to demonstrate spiritual maturity by abandoning conventional morality. The Sufi tradition includes wisdom literature clarifying that authentic divine love manifests as compassion, justice, and the protection of the vulnerable—not their exploitation. However, movements lacking this ethical grounding strip away the safeguards. Examining this concept reveals how a genuine spiritual insight—that love transcends ego—can be weaponized to rationalize harm. It illuminates the psychological mechanisms by which followers reframe abuse as spiritual privilege, remaining committed even as their wellbeing deteriorates.
