Neo-Platonism and spirituality

Neo-Platonism, developed by Plotinus and others, taught that reality emanates downward from the One (ultimate source) through successive levels of being, and that the goal is mystical return upward through contemplation and purification. It profoundly shaped Christian, Islamic, and Jewish mysticism by providing a philosophical framework for understanding how the infinite could relate to the finite without losing transcendence.
