Religious ecstasy

Religious ecstasy is an overwhelming state of union or connection with the divine—glossolalia, Sufi dancing, mystical rapture—where the boundaries of self dissolve and ordinary consciousness yields to something felt as infinitely greater. These experiences, whether produced by fasting, rhythm, breath, or grace itself, have been central to human spirituality, though institutions have always struggled to contain or control them.
