Fair trade examined

A certification that attempts to guarantee farmers and workers in poor countries receive fair compensation, yet often benefits middlemen more than producers and provides only modest income gains that do not close structural poverty gaps. It works better as harm reduction than salvation and at its best creates conditions for local market development.
