When diverse teams struggle with performative decolonization efforts

Our nonprofit team is supposed to be implementing 'decolonized' practices but half of us are from the communities we serve and half aren't, and the white members keep proposing solutions that sound progressive but feel like the same old savior complex with new vocabulary. We're stuck because calling it out directly feels too risky for those of us whose jobs depend on staying here, but staying silent feels like betraying everything we're supposed to stand for.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

A group is learning that good intentions and new language can't bridge the gap between those who've lived colonization and those who've only studied it.
