When creative partners disagree on traditional versus contemporary approaches in Islamic calligraphy

My calligraphy partner and I have been commissioned to create a series that weaves Quranic verses through geometric mandala patterns, but she wants the text to follow strict traditional forms while I'm drawn to letting the letters break into more expressive, flowing shapes that serve the overall composition. We're both deeply respectful of the sacred nature of the work, but our creative instincts are pulling us toward completely different interpretations of how reverence should manifest visually.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

Two artists must navigate the tension between honoring traditional forms and allowing personal creative expression when working with sacred text.
