When book clubs become performance spaces for intellectual snobbery

Our book club started as a way to discuss serious literature but we've devolved into just making snarky comments about everything we read, and I realize we're not actually engaging with the books anymore—we're just performing our cleverness for each other. I miss having real conversations but I don't know how to break us out of this cycle of intellectual superiority.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

The irony intended to demonstrate sophistication can become the very thing that prevents genuine intellectual curiosity and connection.
