When parent and child share mental health struggles

My teenage daughter and I are both dealing with depression and anxiety and sometimes when she's having a hard day I can't tell if I'm helping her or just projecting my own struggles onto the situation. We'll both be crying and I don't know if that's connection or if I'm failing her by not being the stable parent she needs.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

The boundary between empathy and enmeshment becomes unclear when both people are fighting the same internal battles.
