Our meditation research group has been practicing mindfulness while monitoring our brain activity, but half of us are becoming obsessed with the data — tracking gamma waves, noting changes in our default mode network — while the others think we're completely missing the point of meditation by focusing on measurements. We started this to deepen our understanding but now we're split between those who want more science and those who think the neuroscience is actually hindering our practice.
More people experience this than they realize.
The tension between objective neurological data and subjective meditative experience is fragmenting a group's shared exploration.
