How to support a chosen family member through grief when they're pushing you away

Jake has been like a brother to me since college and when his mom was dying last year I was there for everything - the hospital visits, the funeral planning, all of it. But now that she's gone he's completely shut down and won't return my calls, and his real siblings are telling me to give him space, but I don't know how to step back from someone who's been family to me for twenty years.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

The boundaries of chosen family become unclear when crisis hits and different people have different ideas about who belongs where.
