When family craft traditions carry forward both skill and harm

My brother and I both learned woodworking from our grandfather, but he's the one who actually became a craftsman and now he's teaching his teenage son — and he's using the same harsh, perfectionist methods that made us both cry as kids. I want to say something but it feels like I'm criticizing our grandfather's legacy and my brother's parenting at the same time.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

Inherited ways of teaching often package wisdom and wounding together, making it hard to honor legacy while protecting the next generation.
