When spiritual communities confront questions of cultural appropriation

My meditation group has been practicing together for two years, but lately we've been having conflicts about cultural appropriation and whether white Americans like us should be engaging with Buddhist practices at all, especially since we're not willing to engage with the political struggles of actual Buddhist communities. Some people think we should find different practices, others think intention matters more than identity, and I'm not sure how to hold space for this conversation without losing people.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

A group seeking wisdom through borrowed practices is being forced to examine whether sincerity is sufficient justification for taking what was not offered to them.
